Demonastration in defense of worker fired from bar "UNICO" in Palermo

On Thursday we held a picket to demand the reinstatement of Sergio Monte who was fired on Tuesday.

The owner of the bar agreed to negotiate with his lawyer on that day, but nothing came of this, since his settlement offer did not include to the possibility of reinstating the comrade to his job.

With this refusal we decided to continue this fight.

Conflict in the bar “Único”

The precarious situation in which workers in the gastronomic sector find themselves is common currency. The miserable starvation wages, the exploitation of workers in different jobs, the constant circumvention of the collective agreement which U.T.H.G.R.A. Made with the complicity of the business chamber – it is like a recipe for a cake which the workers bake but we only get the crumbs left over from the banquet. And Único bar is a good example of this.

Employing workers through an abusive oral contract, exploiting the plight of those who have nothing to feed their families, keeping those working in the semi-legal system, combined with very low wages (which in many cases do not exceed 2000 pesos for 9 hours work), with the actual amount of wages declared only 25% of total agreement (base salary of 3100 pesos). The additional payments are given at the discretion of the employer, who abuses this. This forces the workers to lie to the Ministry of Labour and other organs which regulate work, under the threat of dismissal. And as if this were not enough, in this frenzy of exploitation, anyone who talks about this is pressured or thrown out. An example is the dismissal of the comrade Sergio Monte (Chachi) who completed his work on April 5 and was notified verbally that his services were no longer required as of the next day, without warning, leaving his family without an income, and without justification, as they claimed they were downsizing but the next day a new employee was hired. The comrade was dismissed for solidarizing with other workers and supporting them in their problems at work and defending their jobs. The boss could not even claim that Sergio did not work well since the clients of the bar can testify that he worked well. This is simply cruelity towards the comrade for the fact that he thought about his workmates.

We demand the immediate reinstatement of comrade Sergio Monte and the labour stability of the workers of the bar, who are at the mercy of the abusers of rights and liberties of the workers.
