Action at Carrefour

On Saturday, February 19, 2011, members of the Workers Federation of Sao Paulo held a picket in front of a Carrefour district of the city of Campinas to denounce the dismissal of Indira Martínez, delegate of the Spanish CNT-AIT, persecuted for union activity and to demonstrate against the increasing persecution of labor by the transnational corporation around the world.

Pamphlets were distributed in front of the supermarket, speeches were made and there were conversations with customers and passersby. Later, workers from the Carrefour came, showing great interest in the case of repression of their Spanish colleague, collecting pamphlets to distribute among their colleagues. Some officials even left the shop to call / talk to the militants, affirming their dissatisfaction with the state unions. The event went peacefully, without any problems.

Near the end of the action,  a very strong odor of sewage came from the supermarket.  Despite the persistance of the strong odor, / the staff  who had taken refuge from the stench outside the supermarket had to return to work. Instead of closing their doors and letting the team  fix the problem to avoid an even more grueling work day, Carrefour stay open as if nothing was happening.  Thus the welfare of the workers was also sacrificed to the profit of the supermarket.

Our sympathies to Indira Martinez and everybody who is exploited by Carrefour in Spain, Brazil and around the world.
